Basivertebral Nerve Ablation: A Modern Approach to Chronic Back Pain Relief

Chronic low back pain doesn’t always come from herniated discs or pinched nerves. In many cases, the pain stems from vertebral endplates, thin layers of tissue between your spinal discs and vertebrae. When these endplates become inflamed or damaged, they can activate the basivertebral nerve, a pain-signaling pathway deep within the spine.

At Wisteria Health, we treat this condition, known as vertebrogenic back pain, with a minimally invasive procedure called basivertebral nerve ablation (BVNA). BVN ablation pain diagnosis and treatment is NEW. Approved by FDA less than 10 years ago. Most people have not been assessed for it.

What Is Basivertebral Nerve Ablation?

Basivertebral nerve ablation is an outpatient procedure that uses targeted radiofrequency energy to deactivate the basivertebral nerve, reducing or eliminating chronic back pain caused by endplate inflammation. The procedure is FDA-cleared and typically takes under an hour, with no hospital stay required.

Who Is a Candidate for BVNA?

You may be a candidate for BVNA if:

  • You’ve had chronic low back pain for more than 6 months

  • You’ve tried physical therapy, injections, or medications with little or no success

  • Your MRI shows Modic Type 1 or 2 changes, a hallmark of vertebrogenic pain

The Process

  1. You’ll be given light sedation and lie face down on a table

  2. A small incision is made, and under X-ray guidance, a probe is guided into the affected vertebra

  3. Radiofrequency energy is applied to the basivertebral nerve

  4. The instruments are removed and the incision is bandaged

  5. Most patients return home within hours

Patients often experience noticeable pain relief within a few weeks.
